Use consistent reference points
Set the empty bag naturally on a flat surface. Measure the widest body width, the body height excluding handles, and the depth from front to back. Note if the bag is measured stuffed, flattened or resting naturally.
Measure the opening separately
A bag can be wide at the base and narrow at the top. Measure the usable opening and any internal compartment that must accommodate a particular item. Exterior measurements are not a promise of fit.
Record handle and strap drop
With the handle or strap held upright, measure vertically from its highest point to the top of the bag body. For adjustable straps, record both the shortest and longest drop. This is different from the total strap length.
Keep the units clear
Record centimetres or inches explicitly. One inch equals 2.54 centimetres. Small differences may arise with soft shapes or different measurement methods, so ask which method was used.
